Back Country Horsemen of Pisgah

One of six chapters in North Carolina affiliated with the Back Country Horsemen of America, this committed group of equestrians has been active since 2010. Our primary focus is on the maintenance and preservation of trails within the Pisgah Ranger District of Pisgah National Forest.

Our purpose is to perpetuate the common-sense use and enjoyment of horses on trails.. We work in collaboration with other Back Country Horsemen chapters, the U.S. Forest Service, and various outdoor organizations, including Pisgah Area SORBA, The Pisgah Conservancy, and the Carolina Mountain Club.

B.C.H.P. gathers for community and dinner, followed by our meeting on the fourth Tuesday of every month at the Mills River Restaurant. Pre-planned workdays are scheduled for the second Tuesday and third Saturday of each month. There are impromptu workdays throughout the month.

What do our workdays look like?

We conduct reconnaissance to evaluate trail tread and blockages, all while gracefully packing out tools and materials on horseback. Once a downed tree is reported, our USFS sawyer-certified members don PPE to wield chainsaws to clear trail corridors of encroaching timber.

By becoming a member, you’ll have the opportunity to:

  • Learn new riding loops and explore the beauty of Pisgah National Forest.

  • Contribute to the preservation and maintenance of our beloved trails.

  • Promote good trail stewardship, kindness, and respect among all trail users.
